Mental Attitude: Resist Temptation?
How do you defeat the impulse to gratify desire and stick to your long-term goals of slimness or sobriety? Just say, "no thanks" and move on. Don't stop and think about it.  The presence of temptation twists your cognitive abilities in ways that promote impulsive behavior.
Psychological Science, Oct 2011

Health Alert: Prescription Painkiller Abuse Epidemic!
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, overdoses involving prescription painkillers have tripled in the past 10 years and now kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined. A significant proportion of deaths are from people who obtain prescription painkillers without a prescription and use them for recreational use.
CDC Vital Signs, Oct 2011

Diet: The Skinny On Coffee.
The more coffee an adult drinks, the lower the risk seems to be for developing basal cell carcinoma (BCC), a common type of skin cancer. Women who had at least 3 cups of coffee daily had a 20% lower chance of developing BCC, compared to those who consumed less than one cup per month. Men who consumed at least three cups of coffee per day had a 9% lower risk of BCC.
Harvard Medical School, Oct 2011

Exercise: Good Reasons.
Exercise gives you more energy to meet the demands of daily life, and provides you with a reserve to meet the demands of unexpected emergencies.
Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Health, 1996

Chiropractic: Posture and Health.
Posture and normal physiology are interrelated. Posture affects and moderates every physiological function from breathing to hormonal production. Abnormal posture is evident in patients with chronic and stress related illnesses. Observe people over 50 and you will see that people with bad posture look unhealthy.
American Journal of Pain Management, 1994

Wellness/Prevention: Preventable Strokes.
One in six people will suffer a stroke and someone dies from a stroke every 6 seconds. 85% of these people have risk factors that can prevent a stroke, if identified. 6 steps to reduce stroke risk: 1) Learn the warning signs of a stroke: sudden numbness, in particular if it only affects one side of the body, loss of balance or sudden vertigo, sudden difficulty in speaking or seeing, and severe headaches with no apparent cause. 2) Check your personal risk factors: high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and diabetes. 3) Exercise regularly and keep physically active. 4) Eat a healthy diet and avoid becoming obese. 5) Avoid cigarette smoke and seek help to stop if you are a smoker. 6) Restrict your alcohol consumption.

Detox - Days 20, 21, & Final Weigh-In 11/23/10 12:21 PM

Day 20
Weight: 191.0 lbs (-0.8lbs)     Cumulative Wt Loss:  18.4lbs

I had a great workout at the gym today and continued to be fairly strict with my diet eating mostly raw vegetables and chicken breast.  Only one more day left and I'm pretty close to my goal of 20 pounds.

Day 21
Weight: 190.4 lbs (-0.6lbs)     Cumulative Wt Loss:  19.0lbs

Slept in a little today, had a shake and a handful of almonds for breakfast.  Soon after that, we headed to the gym.  I had a ton of motivation today to work out really hard as it was my last day on the detox.  We decided to cut the detox a little early.  Instead of waiting until tomorrow morning for my final weigh-in, I ended up weighing in tonight.   After the weigh-in (190.2lbs), we celebrated with a little champagne!  I set my weight loss goal very high (20lbs) and came real close to hitting it, so I'm very happy with my results.  Plus, it was a lot easier than I anticipated.

Final Weight:  190.2 lbs

Total Weight Lost: 19.2 lbs

Well, we're headed back up to Jersey for Thanksgiving.  I'm going to try to be good and limit certain foods, but I'm pretty sure my grandmother has other ideas!  My new goal is to lose whatever I gain over the long Thanksgiving weekend by Christmas, maintaining that 190 lb mark.  Thanks for following my blog... I hope everyone has a healthy and happy Thanksgiving!

Detox - Days 14 through 19 11/20/10 1:29 PM

Day 14
Weight: 195.4 lbs (-0.6lbs)     Cumulative Wt Loss:  14.0lbs

I slept in a little later than usual today and woke up completely refreshed.  I had another large scrambled egg white vegetable omelet this morning along with my daily shake (with frozen strawberries, detox mix, and added protein).  This meal completely fills me up every time and egg whites are really low in calories (17 calories per egg white) and high in protein.  I worked out at the gym today and felt pretty good doing so.

Day 15
Weight: 194.6 lbs (-0.8lbs)     Cumulative Wt Loss:  14.8lbs

So, after 2 weeks I'm down almost 15 pounds.  While I am VERY happy with my results so far, I would really like to hit the 20 pound mark.  In order to reach my goal, I'm going to try to increase my workout frequency (as I've been slacking recently) and rely more on eating mostly just vegetables, lean chicken breast, and detox shakes.  Overall, today went quite well although I didn't get to my workout as planned.

Day 16
Weight: 194.8 lbs (+0.2lbs)     Cumulative Wt Loss:  14.6lbs

Despite seeing a slight increase in weight this morning, today was a great day.  I was filled with energy and actually followed through on working out.  We also had 2 volleyball matches in the evening that were a ton of fun (although we did lose one unfortunately).

Day 17
Weight: 193.8 lbs (-1.0lbs)     Cumulative Wt Loss:  15.6lbs

Today was a typical weekday on the detox as the day flew by at the office.  We snacked on apple slices periodically throughout the day to control any big time cravings.

Day 18
Weight: 192.6 lbs (-1.2lbs)     Cumulative Wt Loss:  16.8lbs

It was great to see such a nice drop in weight in consecutive days.  The limited carbs (as I'm eating mostly just lean chicken or turkey breast and vegetables) and the increased workouts are really paying off!  I was able to get myself to the gym again today.

Day 19
Weight: 191.8 lbs (-0.8lbs)     Cumulative Wt Loss:  17.6lbs

Over lunch today, I walked over to Harris Teeter to grab one of there huge ready made salads.  I must admit that while I was there I did stop at EVERY free sample tray to grab a quick bite of food I was not supposed to have.  The salad really filled me up, even though I had to take out the cheese and hard boiled egg yolks.  Unfortunately, we got home quite late and I didn't feel motivated to work out.

Detox - Day 11, 12, & 13 11/14/10 12:27 PM

Day 11
Weight: 198.0 lbs (-0.4lbs)     Cumulative Wt Loss:  11.4lbs

After a slightly rundown day yesterday, I was back to feeling great again today.  My golf game did not feel the same, as we played nine holes in the afternoon and it wasn't pretty!  But, we had a fun time and it helped keep our minds off any potential cravings.  For dinner, we chicken with steamed vegetables.  This was the first day we were allowed to eat meat and it tasted really good.  Overall, a great day!

Day 12
Weight: 196.0 lbs (-2.0lbs)     Cumulative Wt Loss:  13.4lbs

I was shocked to see that I was down 2 pounds since yesterday.  I expect not to see much of a change in tomorrow's weigh-in.  The day went quite well and my energy level was significantly high.  We baked chicken breast tenderloins marinated in light Italian dressing and chopped garlic and onions.  This was probably the most delicious dish we had since the start of the detox.  Once again, we had steamed veggies as a side.  Steamed ziplock bags are a lifesaver on this cleanse!

Day 13
Weight: 196.0 lbs (-0.0lbs)     Cumulative Wt Loss:  13.4lbs

As expected, there was no weight loss from yesterday's weigh-in.  I had a pretty large vegetable egg white omelet this morning that really hit the spot.  I felt great at the gym this afternoon with no noted fatigue.  Dr. Pam made a great turkey chili tonight with diced tomatoes, garlic, celery, ground turkey breast, onions, and radish.  It was very good, however we definitely noticed that kidney and black beans were missing (as they are not allowed on the detox).
